LAND NAVIGATION WORKSHOP
Two-Day Introduction to Land Navigation
September 19–20, 2026
9:00 AM–5:00 PM each day

Instructor: Retired Green Beret Mike Adkins
This is a daytime workshop and camping is not required. Participants will receive a lunch break each day and may bring their lunch or leave the park to get food nearby.
Detailed meeting location, parking and arrival/check-in instructions will be provided to registered participants prior to the workshop.
The course is an introduction to land navigation using a map and compass.
What will we learn?
· Introduction to map reading and the topographical map
· Understanding and utilizing marginal data
· What is magnetic declination and how to utilize it
· Use of a mapping protractor
· Plotting coordinates with MGRS/NGS
· Basic introduction to the military lensatic compass (this will not be the compass we are using in the course)
· How to use an orienteering compass
· Understanding pace count/distance measurement
· Route planning
· Practical application in the field
· Where to find additional resources
What you won’t learn:
· How to use a G.P.S. (Global Positioning System)
· U.T.M. plotting (Universal Transverse Mercator)
· Military tactics
· How to make sourdough bread
