Two-Day Introduction to Land Navigation
Taught by Retired Green Beret Mike Adkins
9:00 AM – 5:00 PM each day | Barren River Lake State Park, Lucas, Kentucky
$450 per participant
When the grid goes down and GPS fails, can you find your way home? This hands-on two-day workshop teaches you real land navigation skills using a map and compass — the same foundational skills used by Special Forces operators in the field.
No GPS. No apps. Just you, a map, and a compass.
What You'll Learn:
- Introduction to map reading and topographical maps
- Understanding and utilizing marginal data
- Magnetic declination and how to use it
- Use of a mapping protractor
- Plotting coordinates with MGRS/NGS
- How to use an orienteering compass
- Understanding pace count and distance measurement
- Route planning
- Practical field application
- Where to find additional resources
This is a daytime workshop — camping is not required. Participants will receive a lunch break each day and may bring their lunch or leave the park to find food nearby.

WOW!!! This was a fantastic experience! I have seen interviews with Jason and Mike about land nav and knew I needed to do this because I tend to get lost easily in the woods. This is a two day class. Day one was an introduction to the concepts of understanding land terrain, a map, compass, plotting points with a handmade protractor and determining the best route between where I am and where I want to go in regards to the lay of the land.
Day two was putting all the concepts together and finding the points that were predetermined by the course instructor. This was my first experience of doing anything like this and it was incredibly rewarding finding the points in the woods.
I would definitely attend another land nav class!
I highly recommend this class for anyone wanting to learn the concepts of land nav and becoming more confident in oneself for finding your way in the woods regardless of age or gender.

The Land Navigation workshop was educational, challenging, and fun. The mix of classroom instruction and practical real world application was well balanced and packed with information. Applying the classroom concepts in the wilderness really helped to solidify the techniques and methods needed to successfully navigate in the real world. You will walk away with a core understanding of compass and map reading as well as many other concepts relevant to Land Navigation. Be prepared to be challenged!
